Astrological Wand Construction
The Astrological Wand is a 36-inch ritual instrument representing Spirit, the twelve signs of the Zodiac, and Matter. It may be used for Astrological Magick and for directing the complete spectrum of zodiacal forces.
Obtain a wooden dowel measuring between 3/8 inch and 3/4 inch in diameter. Hold several sizes in your hand and choose the one that feels most comfortable. Bloodwood or Kou are recommended, but another suitable wood may be used if these are unavailable.
Lightly sand the dowel to remove dirt and uneven areas. When finished, it should measure exactly 36 inches. Paint the entire wand White and allow it to dry before marking and painting the individual sections.
Optional Universal Fluid Condenser: Some practitioners place a Universal Fluid Condenser inside the Wand. If you choose to do so, drill a sealable compartment two inches deep into the White end before painting. Insert the Fluid Condenser and securely seal the opening.
- Measure seven inches from one end of the Wand and mark the point lightly with pencil. This will form the White section.

From that mark, measure twelve sections of two inches each. Mark each division lightly with pencil. When finished, the Wand should contain:
- One White section measuring 7 inches.
- Twelve zodiacal sections measuring 2 inches each.
- One Black section measuring 5 inches.
- Paint the 7-inch end the brightest White available and the 5-inch end the darkest Black available. Paint the twelve 2-inch zodiacal sections in the order shown below.

- After all paint has dried, apply a protective clear finish such as Varathane. Several coats may be used for additional protection.
- Optional: Affix a piece of Preseli Bluestone to the top of the White end of the Wand.
The White end represents Spirit or the Divine, while the Black end represents Matter. The twelve zodiacal colors between them represent the full spectrum of the human psyche and its intermediary position between Spirit and Matter.
The twelve zodiacal divisions, together with the Black end, also create thirteen major boundaries within the design. In this symbolism, thirteen represents Unity and the connection of the completed Wand with the Divine Mind.
